Oh my former boss has to feel proud. Gloria Steinem must well know that the testosterone overloaded bigshots who’ve ruled the world by hook and crook and aggression are literally getting their private parts caught in the new web of female-driven conventions and laws. It’s startling to watch them go down, and to note that for the most part these guys were born and bred into an older crumbling macho tradition.
Take Schwarzenegger for example. His patriarchal prerogative has apparently included adulterous groping and screwing around. Fifty years ago, his pretty wife Maria Shriver would have been called the victim in the latest tabloid revelations of her husband’s canoodling with the household maid Maria Baena. He didn’t even bother to diminish his pleasure by using protection and thus he fathered a look-alike son.
Indeed fifty years ago, a housemaid may well have been suicidal at any point in the continuing scandal. Her shame at having an out–of-wedlock child would only have been equaled by Maria S. Schwarzenegger’s stinging embarrassment at not being capable of holding the mighty Schwarzenegger’s sexual attention.
Instead the former maid Maria Baena has provided family photographs as well as chapter and verse about seductions on the Schwarzenegger marital bed.
The tables are turning:Maria Shriver was welcomed with open arms by Oprah and is most certainly to get a career boost. While poor Arnold has reportedly postponed the start date of his macho comeback movie “for personal reasons”.
Now another sleaze bites the dust (as it were) because a Pierre hotel employee told police that Abdel-Salam Omar called room service requesting tissues in his swanky $900 a day room. When the hotel employee delivered the tissues the Egyptian CEO of a leading salt producing company grabbed her breasts and groped her and grinded against her. I wonder how many other times he’s committed similar acts.
Didn’t he know about poor Frenchman Dominique-Strauss-Kahn who also recently misjudged just how far women’s rights have progressed in this country during his long lifetime. He never dreamed he too could be brought down by a maid. Her protests at being raped would have been ignored and hushed-up fifty years ago.
And what about the venerable Phillip Roth arguably one of the best novelists in the English language. After he was awarded the Booker Prize in England, one judge quit in anger. She cited the fact that he was writing the same thing over and over. (Hey don’t most artists do variations on their theme.) Her cryptic reasons can be speculated on: she’s the editor of the feminist press Virago and is probably retching over the master’s prose filled with untrammeled patriarchal righteousness .
Cherchez les femmes indeed.
