My heart goes out to Mia Farrow. The poor woman strikes me from a distance as super intelligent and tortured by conflicting demons.
Reading the highly researched article by Robert B. Weide in the Daily Beast is a must for people who are still curious about the 1992 scandal that involved Farrow, Woody Allen, Soon Yi Previn and Dylan Farrow who is Mia and Woody’s adopted daughter.
I remember speaking three years before the scandal to a friend of Woody’s who’d just had a baby. The friend said that he told Woody he was worried because he loved his new baby daughter so much that when he held her he was afraid he was going to get an erection.
“Don’t worry,” Woody assured him, “It never happens.”
This response means a lot to me, and is one reason I don’t believe Mia’s strong accusations. Another reason is that the alleged abuse took place three days AFTER Mia learned about Woody and Soon Yi. Would Mia allow Woody to be alone with Dylan at that point in time? Another thing that casts doubt on Mia’s allegations is the testimony of the nurse who said Dylan was out of her sight that day for only five short minutes. And, Woody was thoroughly vetted by authorities before he was allowed to adopt each of his daughters being raised by him and Soon Yi. Finally, if Soon Yi ( who seems smart and spunky) believed Mia’s allegations, would she adopt little girls with Woody? I don’t think so.
Alas, many signs point to sexual abuse as a continuing theme of Mia’s own tortured past. Michael Douglas once told me that many actresses were sexually abused and thus learned instinctively to use sex as a weapon. Mia’s brother John received a ten-year sentence for child molestation. Besides which, Mia Farrow’s adopting and caring for so many children hints at a psychological truism: Farrow herself likely longed for protection as a child. Could Mia Farrow be a victim of childhood sexual abuse herself?
